Just Thinking Out Loud

Bad weather rolls in. My internet connection disappears. I don't understand this, but it happens every time we get a bit of nasty weather. How does this weather effect the phone lines. DSL still uses phone lines...
It makes no sense to me.
Any technical whizzes out there have an explanation for my frustrations?
